Caspian Energy Market Insights | Baku Energy Week & OGU 2026

"Natural gas is increasingly being recognized as a key component of the low-carbon energy mix, supporting both growing energy demand and a secure energy transition."
Lamine Bouras
Engineering Manager

By attending Baku Energy Week and OGU, the PARIFEX teams took part in two of the leading Caspian energy market events in Central Asia and the Caspian region. From meeting key market players and engaging with our partners to identifying emerging trends and gaining a deeper understanding of industrial needs, here are the key insights and takeaways from these must-attend events. Lamine Bouras, Engineering Manager at PARIFEX, shares the key insights of the Caspian energy market, including opportunities for French companies.

What trends have you observed in the energy markets of Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and, more broadly, the Caspian Sea region?

There is a clear and growing interest among market players in natural gas, as it addresses several key challenges simultaneously. On the one hand, it helps meet rapidly increasing energy demand, while on the other, it has become a key component of the low-carbon energy mix. This also implies that the entire ecosystem and value chain must continue to evolve in order to significantly reduce their environmental impact and achieve ambitious carbon neutrality targets.

In your opinion, what are the industry’s main concerns today?

These events focus on major themes such as the development, modernization, and energy transition of the oil and gas industry in Central Asia. Among the most frequently discussed priorities are optimizing gas processing, refining, and petrochemical operations, as well as strengthening the security of natural gas transportation networks to ensure reliable energy supplies across Central Asian energy corridors.

At the same time, the energy transition remains a central topic, alongside the integration of technological solutions aimed at reducing the environmental footprint throughout the entire natural gas value chain, from upstream to downstream activities.

Finally, there is growing recognition of natural gas as a key component of the low-carbon energy mix, particularly because of its ability to support a smooth and secure energy transition.

Did these exhibitions provide an opportunity to discover specific technological innovations or developments?

Absolutely. The Caspian oil and gas industry is undergoing rapid transformation through the adoption of technologies such as digitalization, decarbonization, and the modernization of existing facilities.

Topics at the heart of the conferences and discussions included AI-powered digital twin solutions for operational support, intelligent instrumentation (IIoT), industrial cybersecurity, and the electrification of facilities to reduce carbon emissions. These developments suggest significant future investments in upgrading existing infrastructure while supporting the deployment of more connected, efficient, and environmentally responsible projects.

Why are these events considered strategic for companies operating in the Caspian markets?

These events provide an excellent opportunity for French and European companies with significant experience in the Caspian markets, especially in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, to share their expertise and insights into the current market dynamics and the specific characteristics of each country.

They also offer the ideal setting to engage with the region’s leading oil and gas stakeholders and discuss the key challenges surrounding development, production, transportation, and processing.

Finally, what is your main takeaway from your visits to OGU and Baku Energy Week?

I was surprised to see that, despite the region’s major role in global energy development, projects involving French companies remain relatively limited. The explanation is quite straightforward: the region has historically been dominated by Russian companies and, more recently, Chinese players, making it comparatively less open to businesses from other countries.

That said, this represents a significant opportunity for companies like ours.
