Speeding, a major issue for local authorities
Excessive or inappropriate speed is the leading cause of fatalities.
19,940
people killed on the European roads in 2024
29 %
fatalities on French roads are due to speeding
Driving just a few km/h above the legal speed limits is enough to cause serious, even irreversible, injuries.
In a collision at 50 km/h, a pedestrian has about a 20% chance of dying, and at 60–80 km/h, a 60% chance.
High speed means longer stopping distance
Vehicle stopping distance increases with speed. The faster a vehicle travels, the longer it takes to stop. Adhering to speed limits greatly reduces the likelihood of serious accidents.
Securing Traffic Lights and Cycle Boxes
Red lights mark intersections where all types of road users converge, especially vulnerable groups such as pedestrians, cyclists, and users of light motorized vehicles like e-scooters.
In 2020, nearly 500,000 violations red-light violations were recorded. Securing these intersections and dedicated cyclist zones is essential to minimize accident risks and safeguard all nearby road users.

Changing Mobility, Adapting Roads
Transportation modes continue to evolve and diversify. Today, roads are shared among cars (85% of users), pedestrians (71%), cyclists (22%), e-scooter riders (9%), and motorized two-wheelers (8%) (source: Covea).
