Road safety challenge to decrease fatal crashes on high-speed roads

When it comes to road safety, the gap is widening between the number of accidents in urban and rural areas, including high-speed roads, in 2022. Despite seriously injured figures are decreasing on urban roads compared to 2019, they are still increasing in suburban areas

Urban, suburban, and high-speed roads: a contrasting picture

From a general point of view, 1,926 people died on suburban roads, being 59% of fatal accidents, and 1,034 on urban roads in 2022. Moreover, there were 7,600 seriously injured on extra urban roads, i.e. 48% of seriously injured people, and 7,200 in town. 300 people passed away in a accident on motorways where fatal crashes keep increasing by 14%.

We note three main evolutions regarding road accidents last year. First, fatal crashes out of town decreased by 1%, especially in car accidents. However, figures stepped up regarding vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists, pedestrians, cyclists, and scooters. On the other hand, the progression of soft mobility did not lead to a raise in accidents and figures remain relatively stable. Lastly, serious and fatal crashes did not reduce on high-speed roads and reached 14%.

Pedestrians and cyclists in danger

Despite the lower pedestrian fatal crashes, we observe that most of them lost their lives in a rural area. Indeed, 25 more people died on extra urban roads and 10 more on high-speed ones.

The trend is also rising for cyclists. Given the cyclism rising trend, +34% in town and +17% in rural area, the death rate increased significantly on both urban and extra urban roads. The dead cyclists figures increased by 16%, especially among those 65 and older, and the seriously injured ones by 8%. The situation is getting worse out of town as well, where the number of cyclists raised by 18%, 137 passed away in 2019, being +47%, and +22% were seriously injured.

Encouraging figures regarding motorcyclists

Unlike cyclists, the situation of motocyclists has improved. Indeed, mortality reduced by 5% compared to 2019 and by 13% in urban areas, whilst 715 motocyclists passed away and 5,400 were seriously injured in 2022. The safety level on roads outside lightly raised even if it decreased among young people with only 40 fatal crashes.

Paris, 18 April 2023 – PARIFEX, a major French company that designs and produces multi-violation radars and road counting solutions, is proud to announce that its 3D-LiDAR-based fixed and mobile speed cameras have been awarded triple certification. The NANO-CAM, compact device designed for mobile speed control, and the NOMAD, fixed speed camera designed for urban use, are now approved for speed control. The highway speed camera Double-Side VIGIE has been registered as well.

PARIFEX’s latest three registrations

PARIFEX fixed and mobile speed control systems NANO-CAM, NOMAD and Double-Side VIGIE, equipped with a 3D LiDAR sensor, have received a series of approvals in recent months, becoming the very first 3D-LiDAR radars approved worldwide. The Double-Side VIGIE, specialized in high-speed control in an extra-urban environment, includes from now an optimised operating system recently approved. Regarding the fixed NOMAD and the mobile NANO-CAM, they are now certified for speed enforcement. “We are proud to have our solutions registered once again. This is a significant step forward for people and goods safety on roads. Indeed, 3D-LiDAR technology is an innovation allowing us to develop additional features in order to improve driver’s behaviour.”, explains Paul-Henri Renard, CEO of PARIFEX.

Versatile 3D-Lidar speed cameras

At height on the shoulder of the road or on a movable tripod, PARIFEX’s speed cameras control speed from 30 to 250 km/h in any environment such as highway, national and local roads, and urban areas. 3D technology provides better vehicle identification and classification as well as optimized vehicle tracking, including in heavy traffic. Moreover, PARIFEX’s solutions are highly resistant to extreme conditions and weather.

User-friendly devices

The NANO-CAM is a light, compact and easily transportable sensor to control speed in any situation. This user-friendly device includes autocalibration for a faster set up. Indeed, the operator only has to install the NANO-CAM on its tripod and the autocalibration starts automatically. Through the 3D-LiDAR sensor, the mobile NANO-CAM speed camera provides a 360-degree vision in order to collect traffic data in real time such as speed, dimensions, direction, distance of all fixed and mobile objects.

Paris, France l 19 May 2022 – PARIFEX, a major French company that develops and produces multi-violation and road counting solutions, is proud to announce that its NANO sensor has been registered by the French laboratory of metrology and tests (LNE). The NANO becomes the very first speed enforcement system including a 3D-LiDAR sensor registered in compliance with the International organization of legal metrology and French decrees worldwide.

The 3D-LiDAR technology stands out in speed enforcement systems

The NANO sensor including the 3D-LiDAR technology has been officially registered by the French laboratory of metrology and tests (LNE). It becomes the very first speed control system using a 3D-LiDAR sensor. « We are very proud to be the first company to offer an innovative speed control system including a 3D-LiDAR sensor. This official registration rewards more than six years of research and development, says Franck Peyré, PARIFEX’s CEO. This is a major first for the LNE and PARIFEX which have been working together on this project.” Indeed, the traditional doppler has been replaced by the advanced 3D-LiDAR technology. PARIFEX maintains its position as pioneer offering even more precise, efficient, and scalable speed control systems.

A new step for speed control systems

Through this new registration, PARIFEX and its NANO sensor pave the way of the use of 3D-LiDAR technology for speed enforcement systems. According to Désiré Codo, PARIFEX’s R&D Manager, “LiDAR makes the operators experience easier. It is easy to set up through the 360-Degree view and does not need any specific orientation. It allows to reduce the civil engineering costs and the verification of facilities. It provides a 3D map of the environment through a fast and unmatched processing time.” Indeed, unlike the usual speed cameras, this cutting-edge solution enables to get more reliable data in any environment, even if in humidity conditions.

A highly precise device

This compact, light and easy transported device is suitable for whether fixed or mobile use. It is the perfect device to collect traffic data and meet smart cities needs in road counting, vehicle classification and object detection. Finally, this scalable solution enables many different kinds of controls since it is able to detect obstacles on level crossing, vehicle in reverse, stop, lateral distance, inter-vehicle distance, pedestrians, etc.

What are the core challenges faced by the public transport industry in relation to traffic management?

The greatest challenge nowadays is to improve road safety for all users. Speed has been identified by the World Health Organization as a key risk factor, influencing both the risk of a road crash as well as the severity of the injuries. Speed contributes to about 30% to 50% of deaths on the road. This relationship between speed and injury severity is particularly critical for vulnerable road users as pedestrians or cyclists. Therefore, an effective speed enforcement system is the most efficient way of reducing road mortality. It is even more effective when you can adapt speed levels to the conditions meaning when the risk is higher (with rain, congestion, category of vehicle..). Once the safety of the users is guaranteed, the more important thing is to improve the user experience for all users and inhabitants.

We are also convinced that we are facing a deep ecological challenge for the future. According to the UN, 68% of the world population will live in a city by 2050 including an increase in the number of vehicles, traffic flows and inevitably congestions. The challenge will be to be able to reduce congestions and noise pollution, improving traffic flows and assisting drivers.

We are very aware of these challenges and we want to be involved in this evolution by helping local communities and governments to build a safer and more eco-friendly transport offer.

What solutions can PARIFEX offer the industry to overcome these challenges?

PARIFEX offers multifunctional systems that can address all the challenges at once : primarily developed for speed and red light enforcement, they are also great tools to deliver essential data to help traffic management : origin-destination matrix, very precise counting and statistics.

It provides a complete mapping of urban traffic flows in order to reduce congestion, manage flows and then reduce carbon emissions. Obviously, it also enables to improve users’ comfort who benefit from a fluid and pleasant journey.

Regarding our solutions, we have decided to combine 3D-LiDAR technology with a camera which provides a really innovative system that can : work with all wheather conditions, analysis data in real time thanks to quick processing, see colors etc. Our sensor is very precise, we got French certification, and adaptable since you can adjust the speed limit according to the category of vehicle detected and the lane of the vehicle, and to other parameters such as weather or congestion. Our solutions are adapted for urban areas and for highways. It’s the Swiss army knife making the operators’ use easier through the compact and light system and its user-friendly interface.

What are PARIFEX’s long-term goals for the public transport industry?

As every company, PARIFEX plays a role in protecting the environment. And the company is already involved in an eco-responsible approach through an environmental policy for its products, partners, and customers, the measure of its carbon footprint, the promotion of everyday responsible habits, to name but a few.
